Qigong Books: Qi gong which is pronounced as “Chee GUNG” is also a part of complementary and alternative medicine. It is an ancient Chinese practice that combines meditation, movement, and regulation of breathing which helps in enhancing the flow of “Qi” which is an ancient term used for vital energy, helps in enhancing immune function and blood circulation.
It is believed that when qi gets blocked or the flow is too quick then this condition leads to health issues. Whereas Qigong therapy helps to restore this balance in the body. This practice helps one’s body to get better mental, spiritual and physical health.
Qigong is widely popular in China for relaxation, exercise, preventative medicine, recreation, and mental healing. It is also employed in the training of martial arts.
There are two main ways in which qigong is practiced; Active Qigong and Passive Qigong. In active qigong, slow and controlled movements are practiced whereas in Passive qigong stillness and calm breathing are practiced.
This therapy can also be practiced by yourself by reading Qigong books or even through a chi kong therapist. The therapist provides an “emitted” qi which helps in promoting healing. Usually, people practice it on their own as it is a self-healing technique.
The goal here is to allow the energy to freely move throughout one’s body and get it connected with the earth. People classify this further in styles for achieving their main goal like:
- Martial style; which improves physical fitness and skill
- Spiritual style; which looks to spiritual enlightenment
- Medical style; which focuses on healing
According to the researchers, Chi Kong’s potential benefits are relatively new, as they tend to have low quality and make it difficult to determine what health benefits this therapy offers. But the researchers do suggest that they have certain other benefits for the human body such as:
Reducing Pain: this therapy helps in easing chronic pain. In 2019, a study was done on 72 office workers who had lower back pain. Half of them were asked to practice Chi Kong therapy and the other half were asked not to practice any therapy. After 6 weeks, people who practiced the Chi kong therapy showed a reduction in their lower back pain.
Supports respiratory health: The researchers also stated that the qigong therapy helps in several breathing techniques which help in reducing stress, strengthening respiratory muscles, reducing inflammation, and supporting the immune system.
Helps in promoting fitness and flexibility: This therapy focuses on the betterment of body postures and movements. In 2016, the researchers found that it helped in healing:
- resting heart rate
- torso flexibility & hand grip strength
- helped in managing blood pressure
- balance body movements and posture
It is also stated that Chi Kong therapy also helps in improving the quality of life after cancer. Qigong and Tai chi helps cancer survivors to improve fatigue, depression, and difficulty in sleeping.
There are no such shreds of evidence that shows or proves that this therapy has any side effects or risks. Other exercises may have caused injuries to a person but as Chi Kong therapy is a slow working therapy, anyone hardly gets the risk of injury.
One can start practicing Qi Gong therapy like:
- Firstly, one should identify their main goal, for example, anyone who is interested in managing his/her chronic condition, etc.
- Then choose a way to learn, choosing in-person classes, Qigong Books, or video tutorials.
- Finding resources, looking for someone who knows Qi gong therapy or takes help from the provided books.
Chi Kung or Qigong helps an individual stay fit and active and helps them in reducing chronic symptoms like stress and pain.
