Hypnosis Books: We all must have seen in movies, series, etc when a person takes a coin-like object and tie it with a thread, and moves this in a pendular motion in front of the eyes of another person. He /She then does whatever and answers all the things asked by that individual. This is the scenario that usually comes to our mind whenever we think of the word hypnosis. But Hypnosis is much more than just this. Hypnosis word is derived from the Greek word “hypnos” which means sleep. This therapy is around since the 18th century.
He was interested in the role of suggestion on the mind and mental behavioral processes which took place when a person used to fall into a hypnotic trance.
Hypnosis is like a dream in which a person experiences high attention, suggestibility, and concentration. A person is hypnotized and that person is in a state of focused attention, vivid fantasies, and heightened suggestibility.
Hypnosis is a real psychological process that is used as a therapeutic tool. It has shown many medical and therapeutic benefits like reduction of anxiety and pain in an individual. This therapy is a treatment option that helps to treat different conditions.
Whenever someone visits a certified hypnotist or hypnotherapist, he or she guides you to have a deep state of relaxation. When a person is in this state, the hypnotist can make suggestions designed to help the individual to open up to change or therapeutic improvement.
These experiences are not that uncommon, they are similar to when a person is watching a movie or is daydreaming and gets zoned out. Hypnosis is like the same trance like experience.
People choose this therapy to treat chronic pains and anxiety caused due to any medical procedures that may have gone through like surgery or childbirth. People have different experiences of hypnosis which can dramatically vary from one person to another.
It is reported that, some people feel a sense of detachment or experience extreme relaxation during the therapy. Some also say that their actions seem to occur outside the consciousnesses.
There are many types of hypnosis, some are like:
- Self Hypnosis: In this a person self induces a hypnotic state, used to control pain or managing stress.
- Guided Hypnosis: In this there is involvement of tools like music and recorded instructions to induce hypnotic state.
- Hypnotherapy: In this a licensed physicians uses this therapy like psychotherapy which helps an individual treat problems like anxiety, depression, etc.
A best known theory which explains hypnosis is by Hilgard’s, he said that when an individual is in a hypnotic state he or she experiences a split of consciousness in which they have two different streams of their mental activity.
One of their stream is consciousness responds to the hypnotherapist suggestions and other is dissociation stream process of information outside the individual’s conscious awareness.
