Horse books: Whenever we think of transportation in earlier times when vehicles were not invented and animals were the only source of transportation, instantly horses come to our mind. Horses share a very unique relationship with a man. They are social animals that live together in herds in the wild. Horses have helped with plowing the fields and hauling goods, conveyed passengers, and tracked cattle and they are often known for their horse sport riding. Before domesticating horses, they were hunted by people in parts of Europe and Iceland for their flesh. Even in the present time, horsehair is used to make mattresses, stiff lining coats, and suits.
But horses have a long history, about 10 million years ago there were up to dozen species that roamed in the Great Plains of North America.
They were in many sizes and shapes. Some horses lived in the open grassland whereas some lived in the forest. All horses belong to a single species named: Equus caballus.
Due to climate changes, grasslands expanded and 20 million years ago new species started evolving rapidly. Earlier they were dog-sized known as Hyracotherium.
It is thought to be more than 300 different types of horse breeds that are present around the world. Clydesdales horses pull heavy wagons, pony breeds are suitable for children and small adults and lighter saddle horses are for riding.
Horses have a wide range of sizes and colors & patterns. Their coat color is decided by their genes. They have two basic coat colors which are red and black. Although, many other genes do affect their final appearance. Mixing of their genes does result in different patterns and colors.
Horses’ height is measured by hands, where one hand equals 10 cm or 4 inches. They have big beautiful eyes and ears with long necks and heads. They come in different sizes and colors because they have been bred for so long for their different traits. They have a large one toe at the end of each leg.
They have much better night visions than us humans. They can hear up to 360 degrees. Although they have a better sense of smell than humans they rely more on their vision. Horses are herbivorous animals that eat a lot of vegetation like hay and grass. They too enjoy other vegetables and fruits.
There are three kinds of horse categories: Ponies, Light Breeds, and Heavy Breeds.
Ponies are small in size and stocky looking. They are developed in a way for a specific environment. Light Breeds are for jumping, herding, riding, and racing. They are great in speed. They have well-defined withers that help them to easily fit with the saddle.
The heavy breeds are very big and built in a way to pull wagons, and plows and carry heavy loads. They are short and have sturdy legs.
Dogs are usually known as man’s best friend, but horses can take this title too. They bond with humans and their relationship is very strong and is considered highly emotional.
They are also known as therapy animals, as many people love to keep them as pets or some stable horses to teach horse riding to other people.
It is also very important to treat them with respect and take care of them when keeping them as pets, you will be reading about how to care for horses in our collection of horse books.
