Histology Books PDF: Histology is the branch of biology that deals with the study of the composition and structure of plant and animal tissues about their specialized functions. In simple words, it means the science of tissues, the word “history” is a Greek word meaning tissue or web, and “logia” means the branch of learning. In histology, microscopes are used to look at the specimens of tissues that have been carefully prepared using special processes known as histological techniques. Like histology, histopathology is the study of tissues that are affected by the disease. This is very useful in making a diagnosis and determining the severity and progress of a condition.

In histology, the slides are prepared using five steps: Fixing, Processing, Embedding, Sectioning, and Staining.

Tissues and the cells are fixed to prevent them from degradation and decay. Processing is done to prevent excessive alteration of tissues when they are embedded.

Embedding is done to involve placing a sample within a supporting material e.g., paraffin or plastic this is so small samples can be cut into thin sections, which are suitable for microscopy.

Sectioning is performed using special blades known as microtomes or ultramicrotomes, which are placed on microscope slides and stained.

There are a variety of staining protocols available, chosen to enhance the visibility of specific types of structures. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E stain) are the most common stains used in histology. Eosin stains cytoplasm pink and Hematoxylin stains cellular nuclei blue.

There are two categories of stain; animal tissue and plant tissue. Plant histology is defined as plant anatomy. The four main types of plant tissues are Vascular tissue, Dermal tissue, Meristematic tissue, and Ground tissue.

The human and other animal tissues are classified into four groups Nervous tissue, Muscle tissue, Epithelial tissue, and Connective tissue.

A histologist is a person who prepares tissues for sectioning, cuts them, stains them, and images them. They work in labs and have highly refined skills, that are used to determine the best way to cut a sample, how to stain sections to make important structures visible while using microscopy.

Later the prepared slides by the histologist are examined by the medical doctors known are pathologists. A pathologist is a person who specializes in identifying abnormal cells and tissues.

They can identify many conditions and diseases, like cancer and parasitic infection, so other doctors, veterinarians, and botanists can devise treatment plans or determine whether an abnormality led to death.
