Animal Anatomy Books: It is said that curiosity helps us learn things better, it also helps in improving our brain memory. The craving of knowing and understanding things is the force behind our development as individuals and has even given us success as a species. As humans are always curious to know more and understand things better, they are also curious about how organisms are structured and how their parts work. The branch of biology that is concerned with the study of the science behind the form and structure of animals is known as Anatomy.
The word anatomy is obtained from the Greek word “ana” which means up and “tome” which means a cutting. Ancient Greek started the study of anatomy more than 2,000 years ago, which have three broad areas:
- phytotomy- the study of plant
- zootomy- the study of animal
- human anatomy
Human anatomy is the study of the human body, which is important to practice medicine and other areas of health. When studying medicine gross, macro, and topographical anatomy is studied which our eyes can see without any help of microscope to see the features inside of an organism.
This involves dissection or noninvasive methods to collect data and knowledge about large organs structure and organ systems in the body.
To understand finer details of the cells and small structures in the body, histology or microanatomy is studied. In this use microscopes are involved. The average human body has 37.2 billion cells out of which more still need to be discovered.
The person who study and researches about human body is known as a Anatomist, which has classified human body into ten basic system as described below:
- Skeletal: which includes the bones, joints and cartilage.
- Muscular: includes muscles, that helps the body move & breathe.
- Nervous: The brain, spinal cord, & cells called nerves that relay electrical impulses between the brain/spinal cord & the rest of the body.
- Respiratory: Includes the lungs, nose, trachea,& other cells and tubes related to breathing.
- Digestive: Organs, such as the mouth, stomach, intestines, and anus, which helps in digesting and absorbing food and dispose of waste products.
- Lymphatic: Tubes called lymph vessels & several organs and cell types that helps in draining away fluids & protect the body.
- Cardiovascular: This includes heart, blood vessels, and blood, that helps in providing nutrients and oxygen to the body and removes waste products.
- Endocrine: This includes organs, such as the pancreas, testes, liver, ovaries, and glands that produce/regulate hormones & other chemical signals.
- Urinary: This includes kidneys and bladder, which filter the blood, produce & excrete urine and remove waste products.
- Male & Female Reproductive Systems: These are the organs that are involved in reproduction, including the uterus, clitoris, and penis.
When in school or after visiting a science museum we have seen structures of skeleton, digestive system models, but how we know our inner body parts look like this from inside? These all were made by skilled anatomist who dissected a dead human body to see how the body parts look or even to understand what must have been the cause of death of a person.
This is how in history the pathologists used to study about human body for thousands of years and this practice is still done today now study more about new muscles, bones, cells, and blood vessels and see how the function.
Although by 1600, microscopes were introduced which help to magnify organs and cells to have a more clear insight look and how they work. Now, with the help of more modern technologies like X-rays, tomography, MRIs helps to see bodies of dead and living organisms.
